“Prepare the way …”

The race to the November 2008 elections brought a new word into the consciousness of many Americans. That word is "maverick."

Here is the definition from both Wikipedia and Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary - Tenth edition:

Maverick: "a person who shows independence of thought or action; an independent individual who does not go along with a group or party."

Are you a maverick?

Should you be? …

I am a maverick. I have been all my life. Some might say I am a "rebel" or "nonconformist." But that is their point of view and a tell-tale sign that they are not mavericks.

When I was in school, if I found that a textbook was confusing or even in error, I would question it. Sometimes, teacher permitting, I would go to the front of the class and draw out on the board what I saw as the correct answer.

Then after class, "when we were alone," someone would come up to me and whisper, "Do you always question your textbooks?"

I replied, "Of course, don’t you?"

And teachers? Yes, they should be questioned, too, should they not?

What is it like to be a maverick?

Well, if you stick with it long enough you can become an expert in it. But as long as someone moves along with "the herd," they will "moo" like the rest and never know what living an independent and free life is really like.

Some think that mavericks are "arrogant." And I guess some are, but that is not a true characteristic, and here’s why:

• Mavericks may trouble non-mavericks because mavericks don’t think like others. They question everything.
• Mavericks are willing to learn. They are not afraid of that which differs from the "status quo."
• Mavericks are willing to take risks and value the importance of keeping their mind free of the thoughts that enslave the masses.
• Mavericks don’t believe opinion polls because these reflect only prevailing opinions of the herd, and not the truth about the subject in question. Although opinion polls can reveal how popular a candidate might be in the eyes of the population.

These posts immerse you into the spiritual life of true mavericks.

Shocking?

Mavericks, if they are pure and true, have a spiritual connection with their Maker.

The spiritual connection is important in a true maverick’s life.

It is this independence that makes a good maverick because they are often on the side of the truth and the "real" reality. They have the "heart of a servant" whose life is dedicated to serving others who share this planet and life.

They do not blindly follow anything or anybody! And they question and fight against policies and practices that lead to oppression and slavery.

The primary characteristic of a maverick is independence combined with the love of the truth. And mavericks don’t have to join anything to get to that point in life!

Now there are some foolish and bullheaded people motivated by fear and group pressure who go around badgering others who don’t think the way they do. But that doesn’t mean they are mavericks. They are only bigots and bullies.

Sometimes it is tough to stand alone.

And for a maverick this can happen a lot. Even with close family relations, being a loner can be difficult.

As you progress through life keep the above definition clearly in mind because this kind of spiritual life is most powerful. But we must let go of the "ties that bind." Those "ties" are not "blessed" if they bind you into slavery and fear, are they?

You will learn why this life of ultimate freedom is so precious and powerful. You will learn about new friends who are able and ready to offer you all the help you need to walk this road.

Once you start down this incredible path you will never want anything else.

It’s true.

You will find that you have everything you need, no matter how bleak current situations appear to you.

How do I know this?

I have experienced it time and again. I watched as circumstances that look awful to most people, turn out to be among the best things that happened to me. This includes anything we could experience in this life: wealth, health, friends and "soul-mates" (to quote John McCain regarding his VP pick of Sarah Palin.)

As I passed through troubled times, I found I could remain calm and eager to see how things would turn out. I learned that I am limited in trying to figure my way out of a problem. But time and again, the solutions came — usually not what I thought, but much better!

That life can be yours too, if you are willing to take the first step and learn about this new way of living that will truly set you free and remove all fear.

What is the most difficult part to becoming a maverick?

I would have to say stepping out of the cocoon that we so carefully wrap around our life.

I felt that way when I really started to get serious about this kind of life. I remember years ago sitting alone in my office trying to overcome my feelings of fear — the fear of "letting go" — but when I did let go, changes started to happen immediately.

And they were all good.

Don’t say to yourself, "I am not ready for this?"

How do you know?

If you are viewing this in the context of your current state, if you are like I was, you will feel some apprehension. That is normal. But fear is not something to which you want to cling and not let go, like a security blanket.

But if you have just the tiniest bit of faith, then let go and cling to that instead and move ahead knowing that what you are about to experience will change your life for the better forever!

Being a true maverick is not a bad thing, is it? After a while you will understand that a maverick is what we were intended to be all along!

It is time for all the mavericks of the world to emerge from their cocoons and take their place, to stand up for the truth, to help free the people from what enslaves them, and loose them from the oppression that keeps people down.
